Bladeroom Data Centres

Construction & Infrastructure

Overview

In September 2016, Hemisphere Freight Services received a tender from our valued customer, Bladeroom Data Centres. The tender involved shipping data centre components in kit form from the UK to Melbourne for a large construction project.

After analysing our customer’s requirements and taking the time to fully understand the cargo, we were able to put together a solution which, despite some very tough competition, saw us come out on top in terms of both efficiency and cost.

With the project duly awarded, organisation of the project began, starting with a face-to-face meeting with the customer to go over the plans from both sides and put forward suggestions to ensure a smooth operation. This also gave us the opportunity to see the cargo in various stages of build, further strengthening our understanding. Further meetings followed between the customer and our internal projects team.

Delivery

Although the air optimiser sections and containers were more straightforward in terms of road transport, we needed flexible solutions, such as side loaders, to collect the high volume of containers from site and deliver them to port for their respective deadlines.

Upon arrival at Southampton Port, the oversize pieces were lifted from the trailers following our pre-determined lifting instructions, which included using specific lifting points, set spreader beam widths, sling lengths and tandem lifts.

A Project Manager was on site throughout the process to ensure we were happy with the lifts and could implement changes. Later, this information would be fed back to our team in Melbourne to ensure the processes at both ends were consistent.

Our thoughts

“After communicating with Bladeroom for a number of years and working with them on smaller projects, we had already been able to demonstrate our abilities and attention to detail, putting us firmly in the frame for this new, larger project.”

Results

After being lifted, the pieces were lowered directly onto Mafi trailers and secured, ready for loading to the vessel. Project Managers were also in attendance to oversee the loading of the cargo.

Our end-to-end approach allows us to make observations and refine each element of the operation, while providing the customer with direct updates. As each phase was successfully shipped from the UK, concise updates were conveyed throughout the entire supply chain, ensuring our level of service was maintained through to the installation site.

17 vessels later, the project was finally completed, on schedule, on budget and to the satisfaction of our customer and consignee.
